Trump campaign seeks increased military assistance for former president’s security

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has requested additional security measures similar to those received by a sitting president due to increased threats against Trump’s life, according to a source familiar with the matter. The campaign has asked for military assets, including armored cars, protection while flying, and temporary airspace restrictions. The White House Chief of Staff, Jeff Zients, connected the campaign with the Department of Homeland Security and Secret Service leadership to address these requests. The Secret Service has been directed by President Joe Biden to provide the highest level of protection for Trump.

The campaign has also requested special forces service members to protect Trump, although this has been denied by a source with knowledge of the matter. Two alleged assassination attempts against Trump have occurred recently, raising concerns about his safety. Intelligence officials have briefed Trump and his campaign on assassination threats from Iran.

Despite these threats and requests for increased security measures, the Pentagon and Secret Service are concerned about violating federal law restricting the use of the military for domestic purposes. The Secret Service has implemented enhancements to their protective operations, including temporary flight restrictions and advanced technology systems to monitor and protect against threats.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has approved increased support from the Department of Homeland Security for candidates around the nation, including explosive experts and technicians, to protect against various threats. Trump is receiving the same level of protection as President Biden, and additional assets are not expected to be provided due to legal restrictions. Overall, the security concerns surrounding Trump’s campaign have led to a heightened focus on protecting the former president from potential threats.
