The Biden administration has announced that it has provided relief to over one million borrowers working in public service, canceling a total of $175 billion in student debt for more than 4.8 million borrowers. This milestone includes $74 million in relief for more than 60,000 borrowers through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Before Biden took office, only 7,000 public servants had ever received debt relief through the program, which was previously plagued by dysfunction. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona emphasized that pursuing a career in public service can lead to debt-free status within a decade. Qualified individuals for the program include nurses, teachers, first responders, and service members. The program is now entirely managed by the Education Department to make it easier for borrowers to participate. Despite legal challenges and court rulings, the administration has made significant progress in providing relief to student loan borrowers. Vice President Kamala Harris has pledged to continue working towards making higher education more affordable and relieving the burden of student debt for all Americans.
