Kithure Kindiki has been approved by Kenya’s parliament as the new deputy president following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua. Kindiki, a close ally of President William Ruto, was nominated to fill the vacancy by Ruto himself. Gachagua, who has filed a court application to stop his removal, faced impeachment on charges of corruption, undermining the government, and stirring ethnic hatred. Despite his absence from the Senate proceedings due to illness, the Senate voted to remove him. Gachagua, who denies the charges against him, had supported Ruto in the 2022 election but has reportedly fallen out with him as political alliances shifted. Ruto’s decision to appoint opposition members to his cabinet following protests against tax increases led to the reshuffling of political alliances. Kindiki, who previously held the interior ministry post, will now be sworn in as the new deputy president. The approval of his nomination marks a significant change in Kenya’s political landscape as the country navigates through shifting political dynamics.
