The number of E. coli cases linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has risen to 90, with one reported death and 27 hospitalizations. The outbreak is believed to be linked to slivered onions used in the burgers. McDonald’s has removed all affected Quarter Pounders from their restaurants, and the CDC states that the risk to the public is now very low. Colorado officials ruled out the beef patties as the source of the outbreak. Thirteen states have reported cases, and the true number of cases is likely higher than reported. A 15-year-old girl in Colorado developed a rare kidney illness after eating several Quarter Pounders at McDonald’s. McDonald’s has stopped sourcing onions from Taylor Farms Colorado Springs, the supplier linked to the contamination. Other restaurant chains in Colorado have also removed onions from their menus as a precaution. The FDA and CDC are investigating the outbreak further to prevent further cases.
