Robert Zemeckis’ latest film, “Here,” featuring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, uses groundbreaking VFX technology to de-age its stars in real time. The movie follows the lives of a couple living in the same house from the past to the future and marks a reunion of the core creatives behind “Forrest Gump.”
The film utilized a new VFX technology called Metaphysic Live, which uses A.I. to instantly add de-aging effects to every shot as it’s being filmed. Unlike traditional methods that require extensive post-production work, Metaphysic Live allows for fully rendered effects to be seen on set in real time.
Zemeckis was impressed by the technology and found it essential for telling the story of “Here” the way he envisioned. The effects were done practically on set, eliminating the need for consulting old footage or waiting for post-production work to be completed.
The film not only de-ages Hanks and Wright for flashback scenes but also ages them up for future scenes. While CGI may have been used for touch-ups, the aging effects appear to have been achieved through makeup and prosthetics alone.
“Here” is a unique drama that captures moments of love, loss, and everyday life in a single room spanning multiple generations. The use of cutting-edge technology like Metaphysic Live has allowed for a new level of storytelling and performance in the film industry.
