Alaska Power & Telephone finishes $29.3M fiber network expansion a year early.

Alaska Power & Telephone Company (APTL) has finished the ‘SEALink South’ submarine fiber optic cable project, completing the work a year early. This initiative was supported by a $29.3 million USDA ReConnect grant along with additional funding from AP&T, establishing a vital connection between Ketchikan, Hollis, and Coffman Cove. The installation enhances network resilience and creates a fiber ‘ring’ around Prince of Wales Island. Further fiber-to-home expansions are set for Klawock (2024-2025), Hollis (2025), and Craig (2026). This project follows APTL’s success with the Lynn Canal Fiber (2016) and SEALink (2022).

“Project Accomplished One Year Ahead of Schedule”

KETCHIKAN, Ala.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Alaska Power & Telephone Company announces the successful completion of the “SEALink South” project, enhancing broadband access in southeast Alaska. Funded by a $29.3 million USDA ReConnect grant, it connects Ketchikan with Hollis and Coffman Cove. Senator Lisa Murkowski noted that this will greatly improve telehealth, education, and community connections for residents. The project aligns with Alaska’s goal for improved broadband, as recognized by Senator Dan Sullivan and stakeholders who partook in its development.

APTL continues to build on its history of facilitating broadband infrastructure, having previously completed significant projects such as the Lynn Canal Fiber and SEALink initiatives to cater to growing internet demands in the region.
