ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU)—GCI, one of Alaska’s major providers of cable TV, internet, and phone services, announced on Tuesday plans to discontinue its cable TV services by mid-2025. While the company reports that only a small percentage of its customers will be affected, the news has elicited mixed reactions from Alaskans. Many residents have expressed concern, while others acknowledge the shift towards online video streaming over traditional television.
In a letter to customers, GCI highlighted changing viewing habits, noting that feedback on services like Yukon TV and Choice TV indicates a growing preference for streaming options. The Yukon TV app offers up to 150 channels through GCI’s internet connection.
Nome resident Simon Kinneen, who supports the transition to streaming, pointed to the improvement of internet services in rural Alaska due to new infrastructure. He mentioned Starlink as an alternative for those facing internet connectivity issues.
Opinions in Anchorage are similarly in favor of streaming, with some residents citing lower costs and fewer commercials as key advantages. Jeff Ray raised concerns about the impact on elderly customers who may not be as tech-savvy or familiar with streaming platforms.
In its letter, GCI reassured customers that no immediate action is required, emphasizing that its internet can support various streaming applications that also offer local channel access. For those who prefer traditional television, the company recommends Xumo, a streaming service with 350 free channels. GCI plans to provide ongoing customer support throughout the transition.
