Dr. Dan O’Connell, a dedicated Dillingham physician, has been honored with the prestigious Paton Award from the Alaska Hospital and Healthcare Association, acknowledging over 40 years of exceptional medical service across Alaskan communities.
O’Connell was one of only three recipients of this year’s award, which celebrates healthcare champions with 40 or more years of service in Alaska. The award was presented during a ceremony earlier this month, where O’Connell delivered a heartfelt, pre-recorded acceptance speech that resonated with attendees at Kanakanak Hospital.
At 88 years old, Dr. O’Connell retired just two years ago after an impressive 59 years in medicine. Having spent nearly 30 years at Bristol Bay Area Health, he has become an integral part of the Dillingham community, frequently visiting the hospital until he reduced his presence to a few mornings each week.
“He’s just a trail of happiness,” said Dr. Kevin Omilusik, Chief Medical Officer. O’Connell’s journey in medicine began in Bethel, Alaska, after his graduation from medical school, and he has been a fixture in rural medicine, delivering over 1,500 babies and adapting to evolving medical practices throughout his career.
Reflecting on his experiences, O’Connell emphasizes the importance of patient relationships, stating, “I would just sort of sit down and ask, ‘How’s your day?’” His approach highlights the significance of listening and understanding in healthcare.
Honoring his friendships, particularly with the late Dr. William Paton, O’Connell shared that emotional moments have defined his career. His wife, Dee O’Connell, proudly supported him through this journey. As he continues to visit Kanakanak Hospital, he remains a mentor and a cherished figure in the community, inspiring both patients and staff.
