Rep. Michael McCaul, Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, was briefly detained at Dulles International Airport due to appearing drunk and disoriented after taking Ambien mixed with alcohol. He missed his flight to Texas, leading to the encounter with police who initially thought he was intoxicated. He was not arrested and was respectful throughout the interaction, eventually calling a family member to pick him up. McCaul took responsibility for the incident, admitting to making a mistake. He expressed gratitude to the officers and is determined to learn from the experience.
McCaul, who has a term limit as committee chair, is seeking a waiver to continue in his role. House Republicans recently held leadership elections during the lame-duck session following the election, where President-elect Donald Trump endorsed Speaker Mike Johnson for another term. McCaul, who was just re-elected to his 11th term, previously chaired the House Homeland Security Committee and is known for his global travels on behalf of the House speaker. The Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority Police did not immediately comment on the incident.
