FBI Arrests Former U.S. Government Worker for Leaking Classified Intel Ahead of Israel-Iran Conflict
This week, Asif William Rahman, a former employee of the U.S. government, was arrested by the FBI in Cambodia and is set to appear in court in Guam. Rahman faces serious charges for allegedly leaking classified information related to Israel’s planned military operations against Iran.
Court documents reveal that Rahman was indicted in Virginia on two counts of disclosing national defense information under the Espionage Act, which could result in a lengthy prison sentence. Reports indicate that he was associated with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), though the agency has not commented on the allegations.
The leaked intelligence documents were reportedly prepared by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGIA), which is responsible for analyzing data from U.S. spy satellites and supporting covert military operations. The sensitive information emerged on a Telegram channel last month, detailing Israel’s movements of military assets in preparation for retaliatory strikes against Iran following a series of attacks, including a significant missile strike by Iran on October 1.
In late October, Israel executed retaliatory strikes on various Iranian sites. The conflict escalated tensions in the region, prompting warnings from Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who threatened a "crushing response" against Israel and the U.S. for their actions.
Rahman’s arrest marks a significant development in ongoing security concerns as intelligence leaks continue to pose risks to national defense and international relations in a volatile geopolitical landscape. The case underscores the critical need for safeguarding sensitive information that is vital to national security and foreign policy initiatives.
