Barrow football rallies to defeat Homer in clash of unbeaten Mid Alaska teams

In a thrilling battle of Mid Alaska Conference unbeatens, the Barrow football team emerged victorious with a 30-20 win over Homer. Despite trailing 20-8 in the third quarter, the Whalers mounted a comeback on the Mariners’ homecoming game to secure the win and improve to 3-0 in the league and 3-2 overall. Homer, now 2-1 in the league and 3-3 overall, will look to bounce back when they host Redington on Friday, September 27 at 5 p.m.

Homer head coach Justin Zank acknowledged Barrow as the team to beat, praising their strong performance. The Mariners had taken a 12-8 lead at halftime behind two touchdown passes from CJ Burns to Justus Grimes, but were unable to maintain their advantage as the bigger Whalers players began to dominate in the fourth quarter. Zank also highlighted significant mistakes made by Homer, including a penalty that negated a potential big play off an onside kick return by Nikifor Reutov.

The varsity Mariners are now focusing on their upcoming game against Redington, aiming to bounce back from the loss to Barrow. The Barrow team showcased their strengths and determination, proving themselves as strong contenders in the Mid Alaska Conference. Homer will be looking to regroup and put up a stronger performance in their next game at home.
