A group of women interested in playing rugby gathered at Davis Park for a “how to play” clinic after the USA women’s sevens rugby team won a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The performance, led by Alaska’s Alev Kelter, generated interest in the sport locally and statewide. Alaska Rugby Union aims to grow women’s rugby in the state, focusing on increasing female participation. The Midnight Suns 7s tournament saw more women’s teams than men’s for the first time this year, indicating a growing interest in the sport. Inspired by Team USA’s success, Anchorage-based teams canceled a scrimmage to co-host a clinic for women wanting to explore rugby. One newcomer, Kat Kennemer, was inspired to return to the sport after watching the Olympics. Parents and kids have shown interest in joining youth rugby leagues, and there is a growing interest in adult divisions across the state. The success of the women’s team is motivating young people and parents of both genders to join the sport. Despite stigmas associated with rugby, efforts are being made to show that it is safe and inclusive. The Union emphasizes teaching the sport the “right way” to highlight the physical outlet, confidence-building, and camaraderie it offers. The Alaska Rugby Union hopes to capitalize on the interest generated by Team USA’s success to grow and promote the sport further.
