ALASKA DIVISION OF FORESTRY PROVIDES TIPS FOR CUTTING CHRISTMAS TREES
As Christmas quickly approaches, many Alaskans are heading out to cut down their own Christmas trees. The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF) has provided some guidelines for those looking to cut their own trees from unrestricted state land.
According to the DOF, individuals are allowed to cut one tree per household that is less than 15 feet tall for personal use only – selling trees is prohibited. When cutting down a tree, it is important to cut it close to the ground, leaving little to no stump behind. The entire tree should be removed and individuals should respect private property boundaries and protect seedlings to ensure future Christmas trees are able to grow.
Stephen Nickel with DOF recommends bringing the tree into a garage overnight to allow the branches to warm up. He also suggests making a fresh cut before placing the tree in a stand and adding water.
For those looking to find unrestricted state land for tree cutting, the DOF website is a useful resource. However, it is important to note that state parks are off-limits for tree cutting activities.
As Christmas day draws near, Alaskans are encouraged to follow these guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable tree-cutting experience. For more information or to report any errors, please contact web@ktuu.com.
