Australia Secures Rain-Affected ODI Victory Over New Zealand
Wellington, 21 December 2024 — Annabel Sutherland’s stellar performance led Australia to a rain-affected 65-run victory over New Zealand in the second ODI of the series at Basin Reserve. Following her impressive century in the previous match, Sutherland continued her formidable form, scoring an unbeaten 105 off 81 balls, marking her second consecutive century and fifth in international play, equaling the tally of star all-rounder Ellyse Perry.
Despite the home team’s strong bowling efforts, particularly by Molly Penfold who recorded 4 for 42, Australia managed to set a competitive total of 291-7. Penfold’s key wickets included those of returning captain Alyssa Healy and Perry, as the top order struggled against the White Ferns’ pace attack on a rainy afternoon.
In response, New Zealand battled to keep up with the revised DLS target amidst deteriorating weather conditions. With the covers coming on in the 31st over, play was eventually called off after New Zealand crawled to 122-5. Kim Garth led the bowling for Australia, securing 2 for 17, as the home side found it challenging to build partnerships.
The win allowed Australia to retain the Rose Bowl with a game to spare, following the rainout of the series opener. The third ODI is scheduled for Monday at the same venue, where clearer weather is anticipated.
Sutherland’s highlights included handling a dropped catch from Penfold and showing explosive batting late in her innings, which showcased her growing impact in international cricket. Despite opportunities missed by debutant Bella James, New Zealand struggled to capitalize on their chances, leading to their 14th consecutive ODI loss to Australia.
