Anchorage is bracing for freezing rain this weekend, with a warm front expected to bring icy conditions starting Saturday morning. The National Weather Service issued an alert warning residents of possible light freezing rain in the Anchorage Bowl and Matanuska Valley, which could result in icy surfaces on untreated roads and sidewalks. Meteorologist Joshua Ribail noted that while temperatures are expected to rise above freezing, creating a chance for rain rather than snow, there is still a risk of icy roads due to the cold ground. This precipitation is just the beginning of a weather pattern that could last until the end of the month, with a possibility of transitioning to snow next week. Anchorage has seen below-average snowfall this season, with only 28 inches compared to the usual 30s by this time of year. Ribail also mentioned that Anchorage has experienced record-breaking snow amounts in recent years. Residents are advised to stay cautious and prepare for potentially slippery roads and sidewalks as the freezing rain moves in.
