An inmate at the Anchorage Correctional Complex in Alaska was critically injured in an assault by another inmate on Wednesday morning. Lawrence Fenumiai, 33, is facing first-degree assault charges for the incident. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation responded to a report of a serious assault between the two inmates, with one suffering life-threatening injuries. The injured man was transported to a hospital and is in critical condition, while Fenumiai received medical treatment at the jail and remains in custody.
Both men were sharing a cell in the general housing unit at the jail, which was in nighttime operations when the fight occurred. They are both unsentenced on felony and misdemeanor charges, according to troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel. Betsy Holley, a spokeswoman for the Alaska Department of Corrections, stated that correctional officers conduct regular checks on all inmates to prevent violence.
Fenumiai was initially jailed in May at Lemon Creek Correctional Center for charges related to an assault case. The specific details of the recent incident are not being disclosed due to an ongoing investigation. The injured inmate’s condition remains critical, and Fenumiai is still in custody facing assault charges. The Alaska State Troopers are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault.
