Anchorage dancer works to grow breaking in Alaska as it debuts in the Olympics

Alaskan B-Boy Icey Ives, also known as Jeremy Viray, is a prominent figure in the state’s hip-hop dance scene. With breaking set to debut as an Olympic sport, Ives is focused on growing Alaska’s dance community and providing opportunities for aspiring dancers. Although he narrowly missed qualifying for the Paris Olympics, Ives remains dedicated to the sport and is training harder than ever.

Ives co-owns Flow Zone, a dance studio in Anchorage, and is passionate about mentoring young dancers. He believes in the importance of leadership and mentorship within the hip-hop community. Despite facing challenges due to limited resources in Alaska compared to the Lower 48, Ives is committed to fostering growth and creativity in the local dance scene.

In addition to his own success in breaking competitions, Ives is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and experience with others. He dreams of touring Alaska with a group of like-minded individuals to inspire the next generation of dancers. With breaking now an Olympic sport, Ives sees a bright future for dancers to gain financial opportunities through sponsorships.

Ives’s next venture is partnering with the Anchorage School District to bring dance education to children in the community. His ultimate goal is to continue pushing the boundaries of his dance career, whether through teaching or competing internationally. The upcoming “style your flow concept jam” at Flow Zone on July 20 promises to be a celebration of diverse dance styles in Anchorage.
