Anchorage will open a warm area on Fourth Avenue to provide comfort and enhance community engagement.

The Anchorage Assembly recently approved a proposal from Mayor Suzanne LaFrance to open an emergency warming area on the eastern side of downtown to accommodate up to 50 people during the coldest weeks of winter. The warming area will be situated at the Henning House property, located at 545 E. Fourth Ave.

The decision to open the warming area was prompted by the urgent need to provide a safe and warm space for individuals experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity in Anchorage. The 10-1 vote by Assembly members approved a $202,000 contract with Henning Inc., a social services nonprofit, to operate the warming area.

Although the plan was met with criticism from the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness, the initiative aims to provide a temporary solution while the city works towards a long-term plan to address homelessness. The warming area will open in the evenings and provide hot beverages, blankets, and a safe environment for those seeking shelter from the cold.

The decision to establish the warming area was made in response to the urgency of the situation, with many people living unsheltered in various locations around the city. While the warming area will operate on a weekly basis depending on the forecasted temperatures, it will serve as a life-saving measure during the winter months.

Despite some concerns regarding the proposed location and the limited capacity of existing emergency shelters, city officials believe that the warming area will provide essential support to those in need during the cold winter season.
