As the snow melts and the rivers and lakes of Alaska come alive with fish, eager anglers are gearing up for another successful fishing season. However, before casting their lines, residents and nonresidents alike must purchase a sport fishing license from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. This can be done online, in person at a local office, or through the ADF&G mobile app.
In addition to obtaining a fishing license, anglers must also adhere to the department’s emergency orders, which may include closures of certain fisheries. This year, there are closures of king salmon fisheries in the Susitna and Kenai River drainages, as well as other specific regulations such as hatchery-only fish in certain streams on the lower Kenai Peninsula.
Anglers are advised to double-check all emergency orders before heading out to fish to ensure they are in compliance with the current regulations. More information about fishing in Alaska, including the Alaska Lake Database and the Fishing Report, can be found on the Fish and Game website.
The Fishing Report is a weekly series that provides updates on fishing conditions and regulations, airing every Thursday between May 16 and September 14. With the proper license, adherence to regulations, and a bit of luck, anglers can look forward to a successful and enjoyable fishing season in the beautiful waters of Alaska.
