Asma al-Assad Files for Divorce and Seeks Return to the UK
New Delhi – Asma al-Assad, the wife of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has officially filed for divorce and expressed her desire to return to the United Kingdom, according to reports from Turkish and Arab media sources referenced by The Jerusalem Post. Asma, who has been living in Moscow since the couple’s exile, is reportedly dissatisfied with her current living situation. She has applied to a Russian court for special permission to leave, with her request under review.
Born in London in 1975, Asma holds dual British-Syrian citizenship and was educated at King’s College London. She married Bashar al-Assad in 2000 and the couple shares three children: Hafez, Zein, and Karim. Asma has reportedly wished to move to London with her children since the onset of the Syrian uprising.
Bashar al-Assad currently resides in Moscow under strict asylum regulations that prevent him from leaving the city or engaging in political activities. His assets, including significant amounts of gold and cash, have been frozen by Russian authorities.
The Assad family, which has ruled Syria for over fifty years, has seen its power significantly eroded in recent years. The regime faced intensified opposition, forcing Bashar to flee Damascus amid a rebel offensive. The Assad dynasty, historically dominated by the Alawite sect in a predominantly Sunni nation, began its reign in 1970 with the rise of Bashar’s father, Hafez al-Assad.
The inner circle surrounding Bashar remains influential, with key figures like his brother Maher and cousin Rami Makhlouf significantly impacting Syria’s military and economic landscape. However, the family’s grip on power is in jeopardy, highlighting the ongoing turmoil within Syria.
