Earlier Start Date for Sockeye Fishing in Russian River Sanctuary Enabled by Rising Escapement

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has announced that the Russian River Sanctuary Area will open early for sport fishing for sockeye salmon. The change in regulations is effective from July 3 to July 14, 2024. Anglers are reminded to adhere to the regulations set for sockeye salmon fishing in the area.

As of June 30, 2024, a total of 27,518 sockeye salmon have passed the Russian River weir, meeting the biological escapement goal. This has prompted the decision to open the Sanctuary Area early to allow anglers more time and area to target these fish. Anglers must adhere to the salmon limits set for the area, with a reminder to properly dispose of fish carcasses to protect the habitat.

Area Management Biologist Phill Stacey stated that the Russian River early-run took some time to materialize, but now that the escapement goal has been met, anglers will have more opportunities to fish in the area. It is important for anglers to respect the rules and regulations set for the area, including keeping personal belongings close and respecting habitat and cultural resource protection sites.

For more information on fishing regulations in the Russian River Sanctuary Area, anglers can contact Area Management Biologist Phill Stacey at (907) 260-2920. This early opening of the Russian River Sanctuary Area provides a unique opportunity for anglers to enjoy some excellent fishing for sockeye salmon.
