Alaska’s Military Bases to Benefit from 2025 National Defense Authorization Act
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) includes several projects aimed at enhancing Alaska’s military bases and providing additional support for military families. Senators Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski, along with Representative Mary Peltola, played pivotal roles in supporting the bill.
Senator Sullivan, who served on the Armed Forces Committee, highlighted that the bill authorized $723.3 million for construction projects in Alaska, with a significant portion allocated to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER). The funding, part of the total $895 billion for military funding nationwide, will further strengthen Alaska’s strategic position in the world.
Several projects have been approved for JBER, including the Joint Integrated Test and Training Center and various infrastructure upgrades. Additionally, Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base are set to receive funding for key projects to enhance their capabilities.
Military families in Alaska will benefit from a 14.5% pay raise for junior enlisted service members, as well as other vital provisions such as Basic Needs Allowance increases and improved healthcare services. The NDAA also includes measures to support military spouses and families, including assisting with professional license transfers and eliminating childcare fee assistance wait lists.
Senator Murkowski emphasized the importance of these initiatives in furthering defense initiatives abroad and protecting borders at home. The bill is seen as a significant step in bolstering Alaska’s military presence and ensuring the well-being of service members and their families.
