Exploring the Ocean’s Depths with MBARI’s Cutting-Edge Technology

MBARI’s Environmental Sample Processor (ESP) is revolutionizing how scientists and resource managers monitor aquatic ecosystems. This “lab in a can” collects real-time data on water quality and biodiversity, making it a cost-effective and efficient tool for tracking harmful organisms and toxins. The ESP can also gather environmental DNA, providing valuable information for biodiversity assessments.

In 2024, MBARI partnered with various collaborators to study and protect freshwater and ocean ecosystems using the ESP technology. The ESP’s versatility and potential have been demonstrated in projects like tracking harmful algal blooms and aiding salmon conservation efforts, showcasing its ability to support ecological research and improve environmental response strategies.

Additionally, the National Aquatic eDNA Strategy, supported by MBARI experts, aims to standardize eDNA practices and improve data sharing for monitoring and safeguarding aquatic resources. MBARI collaborated with the Monterey Bay Aquarium to test eDNA sampling technologies in a controlled environment, further advancing the use of eDNA in biodiversity assessments.

The ESP is a valuable tool for transforming how we monitor the health of our oceans, lakes, and rivers. MBARI’s commitment to collaboration, innovation, and expanding eDNA technology is vital for addressing the threats facing aquatic ecosystems and improving conservation efforts.
