Israel Confirms Assassination of Former Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran
In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Israel has officially acknowledged the assassination of former Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran on July 31. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated the nation aims to “decapitate” the leadership of Houthi rebels in Yemen, affirming a military strategy reminiscent of Haniyeh’s elimination. Katz emphasized that any entity threatening Israel would face severe repercussions from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The admission comes nearly five months after Haniyeh’s death, which was shrouded in rumors and accusations against Israel. Haniyeh was reportedly killed in a blast at a guesthouse, attributed to an explosive device installed by Israeli operatives weeks prior to his visit. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards claimed the attack utilized a "short-range projectile" launched from outside the accommodation. Tehran has since accused the United States of facilitating Israel’s covert operations.
Haniyeh’s killing exacerbated fears of a war between Iran and Israel, prompting the U.S. to bolster its military presence in the region amidst threats from Iranian allies, including Hamas and Hezbollah. The former Hamas leader, who resided in Qatar, played a pivotal role in negotiating ceasefire agreements in Gaza and was linked to the planning of Hamas’s recent attack on Israel that initiated a violent conflict.
His assassination follows the killing of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in a separate Israeli air strike, marking a troubling trend of targeted operations against leaders of groups opposing Israel.
