Jordan, Qatar, and Turkey Engage Syria in Diplomatic Revitalization Following Assad’s Overthrow
In a significant shift in regional diplomacy, Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi met with Ahmed al-Sharaa, Syria’s de facto leader, in Damascus, marking a renewed commitment to support Syria during its rebuilding phase after the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad two weeks ago. Safadi emphasized Jordan’s support for a stable and secure Syria that respects its people’s rights in a process aligning with their aspirations.
Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed al-Khulaifi, also arrived in Damascus shortly after reopening Qatar’s embassy for the first time in 13 years, signaling robust engagement from the Gulf state. Al-Khulaifi’s visit aims to reinforce Qatar’s commitment to assist the Syrian populace, while a high-profile visit from Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reiterated Ankara’s readiness to support Syria in the political transition and reconstruction efforts.
Jordan shares a 375km border with Syria, prompting concerns over security, drug trafficking, and terrorism, particularly as Jordan has ramped up border controls against smuggling. Safadi condemned recent Israeli strikes in Syria as violations of sovereignty, calling for an Israeli withdrawal in line with international agreements.
The diplomatic interactions reflect a wider regional consensus on recognizing the new Syrian leadership amid calls for an inclusive political transition after years of conflict. The meetings with regional leaders are pivotal as al-Sharaa seeks formal diplomatic recognition, with support indicated from the U.S. and ongoing diplomatic engagement from Arab nations, with a Saudi delegation expected soon.
Iran, which had supported Assad, confirmed its position on upholding Syria’s sovereignty, asserting the need for a future free of foreign interference, amidst shifting allegiances in the region.
