Brooklyn Woman Set on Fire While Asleep on Subway; Suspect Arrested
New York City police have arrested a man in connection with the shocking death of a woman who was set on fire while sleeping on a subway train in Brooklyn. The tragic incident occurred early Sunday at approximately 7:30 a.m. on a stationary subway train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the unidentified victim was approached by a stranger who ignited her clothing using a lighter. Officers conducting a routine patrol in the area detected smoke and discovered the woman ablaze in the subway car. Despite immediate emergency assistance, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Remarkably, the suspect remained at the station and was found sitting on a platform bench just outside the train. Thanks to body camera footage, police disseminated images of the individual, leading to tips from three high school students who recognized him. The man, carrying a lighter, was arrested later that day.
NYPD officials noted that the victim and the assailant did not appear to know each other, and investigations into the identity of the victim and the motive behind the attack are ongoing. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch condemned the attack as "one of the most depraved crimes one person could possibly commit against another human being."
This incident has raised concerns about safety in the city’s subway system, prompting New York Governor Kathy Hochul to increase police presence and implement random security checks. Earlier this month, the city faced unrest when a Marine veteran was acquitted in a high-profile subway case.
As investigations continue, the community and authorities seek to address escalating subway violence and ensure the safety of New Yorkers.
