Researchers and students discuss ancient beavers, sea floor bumps, and winter air for better understanding.

Highlights from the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union

More than 25,000 scientists gathered at the Walter Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. from Dec. 9-13 for the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union. Here are some of the notable presentations:

Uncovering Ancient Beavers

Neve Baker from the University of Minnesota presented her research on using ancient traces of DNA in pond sediments to determine the historical presence of beavers. Her study revealed evidence of beavers living in Grand Teton National Park 7,500 years ago, sparking interest from California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials for potential restoration efforts. Baker plans to expand her research to northern lakes in Alaska in 2025.

The Mystery of Sikuliaq Knoll

Kendal Hobbs of Oregon State University showcased her findings on a mysterious 400-foot bump on the Alaska sea floor, dubbed ‘Sikuliaq Knoll.’ Still undetermined, possibilities range from a seamount to earthquake activity or even debris from a meteorite strike. With no clear answers yet, the curiosity surrounding this underwater formation continues.

Fairbanks’ Air Quality Concerns

Manabu Shiraiwa from the University of California, Irvine shed light on the air quality challenges faced by Fairbanks, Alaska during winter temperature inversions. The city’s air pollution levels were found to be equivalent to smoking a cigarette per day on the worst days, with indoor air quality impacted by wood and pellet stove use. Shiraiwa’s research highlighted the need for improved air quality measures in the region.

Overall, the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union offered a platform for scientists to share groundbreaking discoveries and collaborate on pressing environmental issues.
