Alaska experiences surprisingly warm weather on Christmas Eve, breaking with seasonal traditions.

Anchorage, Alaska is set to experience a warmer than usual Christmas this year, with temperatures about 10 degrees above normal. While the city typically sees snow on Christmas Day, this year will bring partly cloudy skies and highs in the low 30s. In contrast, Southeast Alaska is expected to have wet and windy conditions, while Western Alaska and the Brooks Range will see heavy snow and strong winds. There are currently eight weather alerts in effect for the state due to the combination of snow and wind.

Despite the mild start to the week, temperatures are expected to gradually drop into the weekend, with Anchorage dipping into the teens and the Interior falling below zero. Alaska’s Weather Source wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and advises those traveling, especially across Western and Southeast Alaska, to stay safe.
