Outrage in Haiti Following Armed Attack on Journalists Covering Hospital Reopening

Haiti’s ongoing struggle with powerful armed gangs intensified on Tuesday when gunmen opened fire on journalists gathered to cover the reopening of the General Hospital, the nation’s largest public hospital, in Port-Au-Prince. Reports indicate that two journalists and a police officer were fatally shot during the attack, though official casualty numbers have not yet been released.

In a statement posted on social media, Haiti’s transitional presidential council extended condolences to the victims’ families and promised that the attack would not go unpunished. This incident highlights the severe climate of violence that has engulfed Haiti, where gangs have gained substantial power, especially following the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.

Law enforcement’s efforts to combat these gangs have been largely ineffective, as they currently control approximately 80 percent of Port-Au-Prince. This widespread violence has critically impacted civilians and led to the disruption of vital services, with a recent UN report citing that only 24 percent of health facilities in the area are operational.

The reopening event for the General Hospital was not the first to face violent interference; a similar event in July was also marred by gunfire. Disturbingly, a video circulating on social media reportedly showed three wounded journalists lying on the hospital floor after the attack on Tuesday.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, notorious gang leader Johnson “Izo” Andre, associated with the Viv Ansanm coalition, publicly claimed responsibility for the attack. As Haiti descends deeper into chaos, the international community watches closely, with calls for immediate action to address the rampant violence and restore stability.
