Prosecutor withdraws petition to reinstate charges against Alec Baldwin in ‘Rust’ shooting incident

Special prosecutor Kari Morrissey has withdrawn an attempt to reinstate charges against Alec Baldwin in the involuntary manslaughter case related to the deadly shooting on the set of the movie “Rust”. The charges were previously dismissed by a judge. Baldwin was holding a prop gun on set near Santa Fe in October 2021 when it discharged, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. The movie’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Hutchins’ death. Baldwin has maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty and stating he did not pull the trigger. The criminal case against him was dismissed in July, with the judge ruling that prosecutors had hidden important evidence. A civil suit against Baldwin, who is also a co-producer of “Rust,” is pending, with Gloria Allred representing Hutchins’ parents. Baldwin has sought to have the civil case dismissed, arguing that the plaintiffs have no viable cause of action. Despite the dismissal of the criminal case, Allred has stated that it does not exonerate Baldwin in civil court, and she believes that all crew members should have a safe workplace. Baldwin has not commented on the civil suit.
