Hanukkah will begin on Dec. 25 this year, coinciding with Christmas Day for the first time since 2005. The Jewish holiday always starts on the 25th but of a different month, following the Kislev month in the Jewish calendar. Rabbi Josef Greenberg and Esty Greenberg from the Alaska Jewish Campus spoke with Alaska’s News Source about the significance of Hanukkah and how Anchorage residents can celebrate the Festival of Lights.
The Greenbergs will be hosting “Cirque De Hanukkah” on Sunday, December 29 at 5 p.m. at the Egan Center to mark the occasion. This event promises to be a festive celebration featuring traditional Hanukkah rituals and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire. The holiday is celebrated by lighting the menorah, eating special foods like latkes and jelly doughnuts, playing dreidel, and exchanging gifts.
Anchorage residents are encouraged to join the Alaska Jewish Campus in celebrating this special holiday and learning more about Jewish traditions. For those interested in attending the Cirque De Hanukkah event, more information can be found on the Alaska Jewish Campus website.
