President-elect Donald Trump took to social media on Christmas Day to suggest that the U.S. could take control of Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal. He wished a merry Christmas to Chinese soldiers he claimed were operating the Panama Canal illegally and suggested the U.S. could annex Canada as its 51st state. Trump also mentioned the strategic importance of Greenland to U.S. national security and said that the U.S. would be present there. He mocked President Joe Biden and sent seasons greetings to the “radical left lunatics.” Trump has criticized Panama for charging high fees for the use of the Panama Canal and suggested that the U.S. could regain control of it. He announced his nomination of Kevin Marino Cabrera as the U.S. Ambassador to Panama, accusing Panama of ripping off the U.S. on the canal. Trump had previously raised the idea of purchasing Greenland, part of Denmark, and showed renewed interest in doing so. Greenland’s prime minister rejected Trump’s comments. Trump has also mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, referred to him as the “governor” of Canada, and warned of issuing tariffs on the country. He previously joked about Canada becoming the 51st state and raised the possibility with Trudeau directly during a dinner at Mar-a-Lago.
