Juneau Drag, led by drag mother Gigi Monroe, is set to make its debut at the Southeast Alaska State Fair in Haines on July 28, 2023. Founded in 2014, Juneau Drag quickly gained popularity in the city for its performances of exaggerated gender expression with flashy costumes and choreography. Monroe, who has been leading the group for a decade, has mentored over 40 local performers in the art of drag.
Reflecting on the group’s journey, Monroe highlights milestones such as the annual New Year’s Eve drag show and the first Pride drag show, Glitz, in 2015. These events have not only showcased the talent of local performers but also brought the community together in celebration. Monroe’s favorite part of leading Juneau Drag is witnessing the growth and evolution of individual performers over the years.
The group’s upcoming performance at the Southeast Alaska State Fair marks a new chapter in its history. As Monroe looks back on the past decade, she is proud of the community that has been built around drag in Juneau. With monthly shows and a dedicated following, Juneau Drag continues to be a beacon of creativity and self-expression in the city. Don’t miss the opportunity to see them shine on the main stage at the fair in July 2023.
