Anchorage School Board Targets Title I Schools for Closure
The Anchorage School Board has recently made the decision to target Title I schools for closure, resulting in the closing and repurposing of Nunaka Valley Elementary and Lake Hood Elementary. This decision follows the closure of Abbott Loop Elementary in 2022. Title I schools are those that receive federal funds to provide additional academic services to at-risk children.
The closure of Title I schools presents a paradox, as it increases class sizes for students who need individualized attention the most. The decision to close schools is influenced by funding uncertainties and demographic shifts in the area.
Critics argue that the targeting of Title I schools is a political move, as evidenced by the timing of the closure announcements. Despite efforts from the community to lobby against closures, many Title I schools remain at risk due to lack of resources and organization.
The closure of neighborhood schools also leads to parents opting for charter and optional programs, draining resources from Title I schools. To address these issues, there is a call for increased parental involvement in advocating for these schools.
As the closures continue, there is a need to address the underlying reasons behind the targeting of Title I schools. It is crucial for the district to recognize and rectify the structural issues leading to these closures.
David Weber, a parent and community board member, highlights the importance of addressing the root causes of school closures and advocating for better outcomes for Title I schools.
