A woman has died after an altercation with police in the Mendenhall Valley on Christmas morning, December 25, 2024. The Juneau Police Department is currently investigating the incident, but has not released the identity of the woman involved. At this time, it is unclear whether an on-duty officer was responsible for her death.
Juneau Police Commander Nick Garza stated that they are still in the process of collecting information and evidence related to the incident. No other individuals were injured during the altercation, but it is uncertain how many officers were involved. Deputy Police Chief Krag Campbell indicated that the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. and promised to provide further details later in the day.
Glacier Highway was closed off from the McNugget Intersection to Jordan Creek Center and Trout Street as police processed the scene. The Valley Breeze In was surrounded by yellow tape as the investigation continued. The woman’s body was covered with a black blanket in the parking lot.
This marks the second police shooting fatality in Juneau this year, following the death of 35-year-old Steven Kissack in July. The officers involved in that incident were cleared of any criminal charges by the state’s Office of Special Prosecutions.
As the investigation unfolds, more information is expected to be released. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
