Elon Musk’s Controversial Support for Germany’s Far-Right AfD
Elon Musk is stepping into the fray of German politics by hosting a live interview with Alice Weidel, chancellor candidate for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), ahead of the nation’s snap election on February 23. The event, set to stream on Musk’s social media platform X, has sparked significant concern among German politicians, as it grants the AfD a level of visibility previously denied to it in a nation wary due to its Nazi past.
With the AfD now ranking second in German national polls, drawing support from around 20% of voters, it has been bolstered by a strong anti-establishment message opposing immigration. Unlike other European right-wing parties that have successfully secured power, the AfD remains on the political margins, largely due to a collective rejection from other German parties, which refuse to collaborate with it.
Musk’s engagement raises critical questions as the AfD has often faced scrutiny for extremist elements within its ranks, with several members expelled for racist language. The party is monitored by domestic intelligence, as significant factions are deemed right-extremist.

Despite Musk’s considerable influence, public sentiment in Germany reveals skepticism towards his intrusion, with three-quarters of voters deeming it inappropriate. However, many believe his endorsement could inadvertently bolster the AfD’s presence in the upcoming election, raising alarms about the intersection of social media, politics, and democracy in Europe.
