UT Arlington Recognized Among Top Universities for Sustainability
January 9, 2025 – The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) has been distinguished as one of the world’s top universities in sustainability, according to the 2025 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Sustainability World University Rankings. UTA ranks in the top 23% globally and 77th among 239 U.S. institutions, underscoring its commitment to sustainable practices and environmental research.
Meghna Tare, UTA’s chief sustainability officer, emphasized the institution’s unwavering dedication to sustainability, stating, "This recognition reflects the collaborative efforts of our community to foster a sustainable and equitable world." The QS rankings, now in their third year, evaluate universities based on their contributions to environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and good governance.
In addition to this ranking, UTA has made significant strides in sustainability initiatives. Earlier this year, the university launched its Climate Action Plan, which aims to reduce carbon emissions through deep decarbonization strategies. This long-term plan seeks to replace fossil fuels with sustainable alternatives while also considering the impact of individual actions, policies, infrastructure, and finances on environmental responsibility.
UTA’s Office of Sustainability is actively implementing measures for resource conservation, education, and food waste reduction. The university also offers various degree programs in sustainability, including a Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Urban Design and minors in Environmental and Sustainability Studies.
Located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, UTA is a Carnegie R-1 institution, signifying very high research activity. With approximately 41,000 students, it is the second-largest university in the UT System. UTA’s commitment to academic excellence and social mobility continues to make it a leader in fostering sustainable practices within the educational landscape.
