ADFG Announces New Fishing Regulations for Copper and Upper Susitna River Watersheds

The Alaska Board of Fisheries recently made several changes to fishing regulations for the Upper Copper/Upper Susitna River drainages at their meeting in Cordova. Changes include delays in the opening of the Chitina Subdistrict personal use dip net salmon fishery, restrictions on king salmon retention for dipnetters, increased bag limits for burbot in Lake Louise, and removal of Arctic grayling bag limits and size restrictions in certain areas.

Additionally, regulations for bait use in several lakes, seasonal fishing closures, and definitions of fishing equipment were adjusted. The opening of the Copper River District commercial fishery was also delayed to ensure more early-run fish enter the Copper River, particularly king salmon.

These changes are aimed at managing fish populations more sustainably and ensuring the health of the fisheries in the area. The new regulations will take effect with the release of the 2025 Northern Alaska Sport Fishing Regulations Summary in April.

For more information or questions regarding the fishing regulation changes in the Upper Copper/Upper Susitna River drainages, individuals can contact Mark Somerville or Tracy Hansen at the Glennallen Fish and Game office. Further details on the Board of Fisheries meeting and the adopted regulations can be found on the Alaska Board of Fisheries website.
