No companies submit bids for oil lease sale in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The US Department of the Interior announced that the Bureau of Land Management did not receive any bids in the oil and gas lease sale for the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). This lease sale was mandated by the 2017 Tax Act, directing BLM to hold two sales within seven years. The Biden administration recently finalized restrictions on the sale to protect wildlife and the environment, limiting the lease sale to 400,000 acres.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to diverse wildlife, and the finalized plan aimed to avoid disrupting important polar bear denning and caribou calving areas. Acting Deputy Secretary Laura Daniel-Davis emphasized in a statement that some places are too special to risk with oil and gas drilling, noting that the lack of interest from oil companies proves that this proposal was misguided.

The BLM’s decision to hold the lease sale despite the lack of bids has sparked criticism, with environmentalists praising the move as a victory for conservation efforts. The oil and gas industry, however, is urged to focus on developing the millions of acres of undeveloped leases elsewhere instead of pursuing speculative drilling in the ANWR.

The DOI’s announcement signifies a shift towards prioritizing conservation and environmental protection in sensitive areas like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. With the lease sale yielding no bids, the future of oil and gas development in the ANWR remains uncertain.
