Vance plans to step down from his Senate position ahead of inauguration

Vice President-elect JD Vance’s resignation from his Senate seat in Ohio is effective at midnight Thursday, allowing him to be sworn in alongside President-elect Donald Trump on Jan. 20. Vance notified Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine of his plans in a letter and expressed gratitude to the people of Ohio for the opportunity to serve in the Senate. He stated that voters mandated to prioritize America’s interests and pledged to work with Trump to enact his agenda.

Vance, a former venture capitalist and the author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” won the Senate seat three years ago with Trump’s endorsement. At 40 years old, he will be the third-youngest vice president in history. DeWine, as governor of Ohio, will choose Vance’s replacement who will serve until a special election in 2026.

Possible replacements for Vance include DeWine’s lieutenant governor Jon Husted, former Ohio GOP chair Jane Timken, state Rep. Jay Edwards, and state Treasurer Robert Sprague. Husted, who has been rumored as a potential candidate for governor once DeWine’s term ends, has not confirmed his interest in the Senate seat.

DeWine hinted at announcing Vance’s replacement soon, but did not disclose details of his conversations with Husted. The decision on Vance’s successor is expected to come next week after a series of considerations.
