Alaska lawmakers introduce initial bills to improve session with increased clarity and engagement.

The Alaska State Legislature has filed more than 80 prefiled bills covering a range of topics, including energy royalty relief, holding legislative sessions in Anchorage, abortion, and election reform. Rep. George Rauscher, R-Wasilla, is a prime sponsor of five of these bills, one of which aims to move legislative sessions to Anchorage from Juneau to save costs.

Rauscher is also proposing to repeal the state’s open primary and ranked-choice voting system, a ballot measure that was narrowly defeated in the 2024 general election. He believes the system is too confusing for voters and that pursuing its removal through the legislative process may be more effective.

Another bill by Rauscher seeks to reduce the royalty rate for new gas production in Cook Inlet to spur investment and address the natural gas shortage. Additional bills introduced cover free meals in public schools, chokehold bans by law enforcement, establishing an Alaska Flood Authority, and reviving a pension program for state employees.

Constitutional amendments proposed by various senators include prohibiting abortions in Alaska, limiting legislative sessions to 90 days, and lowering the threshold to override vetoes. The next set of prefiled bills is scheduled to be released on Jan. 17.

The bills reflect a wide range of legislative priorities and initiatives being proposed by lawmakers in Alaska. Supporters hope that with a more moderate House majority this session, the bills will have better success in advancing through the legislative process.
