Anchorage should not build a highway through Chester Creek greenbelt to protect the environment.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is considering Alternative D, a plan to construct a four-lane elevated highway through the Chester Creek greenbelt and Eastchester Park. This proposal has raised concerns about the impact on parkland, noise, pollution, and neighborhood livability. However, the current connection of the Glenn and Seward Highways via Ingra and Gambell streets is deemed functional for current and future traffic needs.

An alternative plan known as the “2050 MTP” alternative has gained support and would focus on improving pedestrian safety in Fairview while promoting neighborhood redevelopment. This plan involves reducing lanes and adding non-motorized improvements to accommodate future regional vehicle delay. Additionally, two tunnel alternatives are being evaluated, which would have minimal negative impacts on neighborhoods and parklands. However, these tunnel projects are expected to be more expensive compared to the 2050 MTP alternative.

Residents of the Rogers Park and Airport Heights neighborhoods urge the opposition to Alternative D, emphasizing the importance of preserving parklands and maintaining the quality of Anchorage neighborhoods. The public is encouraged to read the DOT alternatives report and submit comments by January 23, 2025, at sewardglennconnection.com. Ultimately, a solution that benefits Fairview without compromising the integrity of parklands and neighborhoods should be prioritized.
