Creating an Enduring Human Legacy on the Moon: Captured in 100 Billion Pixels | Science and Technology

Nuit-Saint-Georges Links Humanity to the Moon with an Innovative Time Capsule Project

In the picturesque French village of Nuit-Saint-Georges, famed as the birthplace of 19th-century astronomer Félix Tisserand, humanity’s quest to connect with the cosmos has taken a new turn. The village, which boasts a rich history intertwined with lunar exploration, is now home to a project called Sanctuary on the Moon. Founded by Benoit Faiveley, a fellow villager, this initiative aims to create a time capsule that will serve as a detailed guide to human civilization, set to be launched toward the moon in 2028.

The inspiration for Sanctuary on the Moon harks back nearly five decades to the Golden Records, attached to the Voyager spacecraft intended for extraterrestrial audiences. In contrast, Faiveley’s project is designed for humanity’s descendants millions of years into the future. The time capsule will consist of 24 sapphire discs engraved with an extraordinary seven billion pixels of information about matter, biology, and human culture.

This endeavor has gained support from high-profile organizations like NASA and UNESCO, with the aim of preserving human knowledge in an era fraught with global conflict and climate change concerns. The discs will detail aspects of human existence, from the intricacies of the human genome to cultural achievements and environmental awareness. Faiveley emphasizes that this project is not about survivalism, but rather about celebrating human fragility and growth.

Scheduled to be part of NASA’s Artemis mission, the Sanctuary on the Moon project represents a monumental leap toward preserving the essence of humanity for future generations, echoing the excitement of discovery that transcends time. As Faiveley puts it, “It is good to speak to the future. It will listen.”
