The University of Alaska Nanooks hockey team secured an exhibition victory against the Simon Fraser Red Leafs on Friday, January 10. Simon Fraser took the lead 1-0 before Alaska’s Peyton Platter scored the equalizer in the second period. The game went to a 3v3 overtime period, with Matt Hubbarde scoring the game-winning goal assisted by Platter.
Alaska successfully killed Simon Fraser’s only power play opportunity and went 0-2 on power plays. Nicholas Grabko made 19 saves, and the Nanooks had a total of 55 shots on goal. Alaska dominated faceoffs, winning 36 out of 53, with Kyle Gaffney leading with 14 wins.
The Nanooks blocked five shots, with both Hubbarde and Platter having a +2 on ice. The teams will face each other again on Saturday.
