The Intersection of Comedy, Suffering and Wonder – Lifestyle Report

Aadyam Theatre, an initiative by the Aditya Birla Group, has returned to Delhi with its seventh edition, opening with an Indian adaptation of Mark Haddon’s novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The play, directed by Atul Kumar, explores themes of human spirit and resilience through the story of Christopher Boone, a 15-year-old boy with Asperger’s syndrome, on a mission to solve the mystery of Mrs Pinto’s dog’s death.

Kumar explains that the play is not just about a boy with Asperger’s, but also about a boy who is perceived as different by neurotypical individuals finding his place in society. The production features Dheer Hira in the lead role, along with a talented ensemble cast.

The play has received both positive and critical feedback from its Mumbai run, leading to refinements for the Delhi edition. Aadyam Theatre’s seventh season includes four other plays with diverse themes and perspectives, promising a unique theatrical experience for audience members.

Through its exploration of Christopher’s world and interactions, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time offers a deeper understanding of the character and his journey, celebrating human achievement against all odds. The production aims to offer a nuanced portrayal of autism and hopes to do justice to the original source material, engaging audiences with its storytelling and performances.
