Avalanche warning issued for Southcentral Alaska – take caution in backcountry areas to avoid danger.

The Alaska Avalanche Information Center has issued a backcountry avalanche warning for Southcentral Alaska. The warning is in effect from Thursday evening through the weekend. Recent heavy snowfall and strong winds have created dangerous avalanche conditions in the backcountry.

Backcountry travelers are warned to avoid avalanche terrain, including steep slopes and open areas below ridgelines. The warning applies to popular backcountry areas such as Turnagain Pass, Hatcher Pass, and the Kenai Mountains.

The Alaska Avalanche Information Center is urging backcountry travelers to stay on low-angled slopes and to be aware of changing conditions. They stress the importance of carrying avalanche safety gear, including beacons, shovels, and probes, and to always ski or ride with a partner.

The warning comes after a series of large avalanches were triggered in the Southcentral region, including a massive slide near Turnagain Pass that buried a popular snowmachine trail. The avalanche danger is expected to remain high through the weekend, with more snowfall and wind forecasted for the region.

Backcountry enthusiasts are advised to check the Alaska Avalanche Information Center’s website for up-to-date avalanche forecasts and to use caution when venturing into the backcountry. The warning serves as a reminder of the inherent risks of backcountry travel in Alaska’s rugged terrain, and the importance of proper avalanche safety education and preparedness.
