ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A backcountry avalanche warning has been issued for Southcentral Alaska by the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center, with avalanche danger rated as high. The warning is in effect from 3 a.m. on Sunday to 3 a.m. on Monday.
The areas under the warning include the Western Chugach and Kenai Mountains, covering locations such as Chugach State Park, Girdwood, Portage, Turnagain Pass, Moose Pass, Summit Lake, Lost Lake, and Seward. The Alaska Department of Transportation announced the closure of Thompson Pass on the Richardson Highway at 10 p.m. on Saturday due to avalanche and weather concerns.
Traveling on or near avalanche terrain in these areas is strongly discouraged during this time. The warning highlights the increased risk of avalanches in these regions and urges caution from residents and visitors.
