ANCIENT CAVE BEAR SKULL UP FOR AUCTION IN ANCHORAGE
A 60,000-year-old caramel-colored skull of an ancient cave bear is currently up for auction in Anchorage, Alaska. The Alaska Auction Company received the skull from a local collector and it is the second of its kind to pass through the auction house. According to Alaska Auction manager Megan Mosesian, this particular skull is much bigger and in better condition than the previous one.
Cave bears, a prehistoric species typically found in caves, were herbivorous despite their large fangs. The unique color and size of this skull make it a rarity in the fossil world. With a length of 23 inches, compared to the average 15-20 inches, and a distinct light brown coloration due to the minerals it was resting in, the skull is described as “museum quality.”
The skull is up for auction until March 20 and has garnered significant online interest. Mosesian estimated its retail value at around $30,000 and has conducted numerous private viewings with potential buyers. While she hopes the skull will remain in Alaska, it is open to bidders worldwide.
Mosesian, although not a collector of fossils, appreciates how ancient artifacts can transport us back in time and help us understand the world that once existed. The unique appeal of owning a piece of extinct history is evident in the high engagement this skull has received at auction.
