Broadway Alaska, a partnership between the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and the Nederlander Organization, has announced a pause in programming for the upcoming 2025-26 season. This decision comes after the organization faced financial challenges, leading to the cancellation of various shows, including a run of “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical” that was scheduled for April 2-13.
Codie Costello, the general manager of Broadway Alaska, emphasized that the pause is necessary to ensure the long-term health of the organization and the quality of the experience for both artists and audiences. The Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, which manages the building’s operations and maintenance, also highlighted a major funding gap that threatens the future of the building and its hosting groups.
Despite the setback, Costello remains optimistic about the future of Broadway Alaska, stating that the pause is a step forward in securing the organization as a vibrant home for the performing arts in the years to come. The organization is actively seeking support at the local, state, and philanthropic levels to navigate through these challenges.
As a result of the pause in programming, the highly anticipated run of “The Lion King” in Anchorage next fall has been canceled. Broadway Alaska assures patrons that they will be kept informed of any progress made in securing the necessary support to resume operations in the future.
