A 24-year-old active-duty airman stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, Quinterius Chappelle, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to the killing of 21-year-old Sahela Sangrait. Sangrait’s badly decomposed body was discovered by deputies on March 4, months after she was reported missing in August 2020. Chappelle is accused of killing Sangrait on the base, though the nature of their relationship is unknown. Chappelle, an aircraft inspection journeyman, has been in the Air Force since April 30, 2019. Military officials are cooperating with local law enforcement in the investigation, and Chappelle is currently being held in the Pennington County Jail with no bond set. The U.S. attorney’s office for South Dakota will prosecute the case. Sangrait, a Native American, was last seen staying with a friend in Eagle Butte before she went missing. The investigation involves multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI. Anyone with information about Sangrait’s killing is encouraged to contact the FBI’s Rapid City office.
